Chamber Visits Legislative Delegation

On Wednesday, March 22, 2017, members of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee made a trip to downtown Raleigh to meet with the legislators who represent our community. Sen. John Alexander, Rep. Chris Malone, and Rep. Joe Johns talked with the group for almost 90 minutes. Sen. Chad Barefoot was scheduled to participate, but had an emergency meeting that took him out of town.

The committee was represented by Andi Curtis, Wake Med; James Holding, Holding Oil; Phyllis Barbour, Wake County Smart Start; Cathy Easop, Thomas Walters Allstate; Holding McLemore, Chad Barefoot’s office; and Ann Welton, Wake Forest Area Chamber.

“We were delighted with the amount of time and attention our representatives gave us,” said Andi Curtis, who is the GAC chairman. “This is the first time in many years that we’ve developed a Legislative Agenda. It was great to have such a candid conversation with the delegation.”

After surveying the Chamber’s membership in 2016, the Legislative Agenda was developed using feedback that was gathered. The top three issues of concern are economic development; transportation; and education. All three topics were discussed at length at the meeting.

The committee will continue to watch for legislation and activities that either support or obstruct the Chamber’s agenda.
